Grimsby Ice Factory and Kasbah (the historic fishing neighbourhood adjacent to it) have been selected for the World Monuments Fund 2014 Watch. World Monuments Fund, which works to bring international attention to important heritage sites at risk, announced its 2014 Watch in New York on Tuesday – suddenly, the eyes of the world are on Grimsby and its heritage.
Now is the time to build on this momentum. The Great Grimsby Ice Factory Trust (GGIFT) is preparing a significant bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for funds to carry out the project. If successful, the project will bring over £12 million into the town, and create a tourism magnet which will boost the economy for years to come.
David Atkinson of Atkinsons Smoked Fish, Ltd. was once of the opinion that the Ice Factory should be torn down, but he has changed his mind: “I see things differently now. If it stays as it is, obviously it's an eyesore. But if it's going to be regenerated – who wouldn't want that to happen? It could potentially be the heart and hub of the town, which will bring visitors here.”
