Upgraded listing for the UK's oldest rollercoaster

We are delighted that English Heritage has decided to award Grade II* listed status to Margate's Scenic Railway - the UK's oldest rollercoaster and fourth oldest in the world.

It was our Conservation Management Plan (2010) for the Dreamland site that made the recommendaiton. The Culture Secretarty has now upgraded the listing following an application from Thanet Council earlier this year and a report from English Heritage. The decision was made in view of the rollercoaster's design, age and rarity.

The site was damaged terribly by a major fire in 2008; it is only one of two amusement rides in the UK to be listed

Our Conservation Management Plan for the site assessed the rollercoaster and other heritage buildings on the site as having 'exceptional' heritage value. The Dreamland site is home to two other listed strucutres - the Grade II* listed Cinema and the Grade II listed menagerie cages.
