Middleport Pottery in Stoke

BBC Radio 4 history show pays a visit to Middleport Pottery

Middleport Pottery in Stoke-on-Trent, the Prince’s Regeneration Trust’s (PRT’s) flagship project, has featured on Radio 4’s Making History show. Presenter Martin Ellis, from Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, visited the building as part of a feature on the revival of ceramics in the Potteries and the role of history and heritage in regeneration. Ellis, a Stoke native, spoke to the Pottery’s visitor centre manager, Teresa Fox-Wells, about the revival of the building and its ceramics production and the PRT’s role in it. Teresa said it had been important for PRT to make Middleport Pottery a working business again, not a museum. He also took a tour of the factory, where world-renowned Burleigh pottery is created using Victorian machinery and traditional, local craftsmanship.

In June 2011, PRT stepped in to save the Victorian pottery site from closure and to ensure that Burleigh stayed in Stoke-on-Trent.
