Upper Dens Works

Former use (incl. architectural history)

This hillside complex was developed by the Baxter Brothers who became the world's premier linen manufacturers over 1840-90. The upper works developed to incorporate a mill, wet spinning mill, calendar press, loomsheds and a series of warehouses and foundries. The main range, 24 bays long and 4 storeys plus an attic high was surmounted by a bellcote and spire. The Lower Works consists of four mills, dominated by the Bell Mill with its fine Italianate bellcote.

New uses

The upper works were converted into housing with engine house being converted into a dramatic central staircase. New build housing around the mill is suitably strong in character and large in scale. The landscaping manages to exploit the qualities of the steeply sloping site while retaining both features and the tough atmosphere of its industrial past. The lower works buildings contain various retail and wholesale firms.
